Cost of painting a trunk
Here's the story...
Where I work, the trunk and spoiler on a customers 68 camaro got bent bad. It has been replaced with a new un painted NOS trunk and spoiler The car has not been driven and the paint job on the car is new and never really seen day light yet. The guy who orig painted the whole car is a p/t amateur painter who paints in his garage (no booth) is saying to paint the trunk & spoiler (British green with silver Z-28 stripes) is going to cost us $3500 What do you think it should cost just for the re paint on the trunk?? Thank you |
It really does depend on a couple of factors, first is he just painting the trunk and spoiler or is saying he is going to also have to blend the qtr panels?
If the latter is the case then seems about right because he is basically painting the whole back of the car. Color will only be going on the trunk and tops of the qtrs but he will have to clear coat the qtrs and roof complete. Once you figure in the cost of matrials, sandpaper, tape, masking paper, and the liquid (paint & clear & primer) those items will add up fast if he uses good products. Plus the labor to mask off the stripes and spray them. Can you feel the lines from the stripes? If not then he has to clear the trunk then sand it down reclear the trunk and the sand and buff. Lots of things to take in to consideration, the days of painting for a couple of hundred dollars are long gone. I'll will run it through my system and see how much I come up with! I'll be back :unibrow: |
I am told he is only painting the trunk and spoiler. I do believe the stripes are under the clear coat (smooth) Thank you Rick

Ok on the high side just doing the trunk with stripes under the clear.
I thought on the crazy side of what I could have to do, so "without" seeing it. If I had to prime and block a few times, I have to clear coat it a couple of time (three times is what I figured) I would be at 25 hours of time. 10 hr for prime and block 5 hr for paint 5 hr for stripes 5 hr for clear block and reclear 25 X $40.00 = $1000.00 for labor Primer $150.00 ready to spray Base coat from my system $250.00 ready to spray Clear coat $500.00 ready to spray Masking materials and sandpaper $150.00 Total for materials $1050.00 Total $2050.00 and this was going through my estimating spreadsheet! Then I would tell you $1500 and come pick it up on Saturday  Hope this helps  |
Thanks That helps a bunch
I am also thinking that since this guy does not do this for a living and does it at his house, he should be a little cheaper then you pros! |

And just for the record I do work from my home shop now (property taxes are way cheaper)! But I have been looking at a couple of shops lately to do more like I used to. It's a pain to have to bring the car to my friends shop to paint it and it's only two blocks from my house :unibrow: I would say they are trying to make you guys PAY up for the mess up??? |
