phr mustang II pulled .99g????
 

Just picked up latest phr mag and it has a blue mustang II with modified factory suspension and like 225 rear tires but all out race tires. I can look back and get the exact details but this seems alittle far fetched to me. I mean an Iroc pulling .90 and this car with less advantageous design ( but race tires pulling .99 avg.? Anyone read this? What do you think? Any of the modified cars on here put a g- meter in and tested their rides?

I have actually been on the track with Alcino, talented driver with a good combo. Yes, he pulls serious skid pad numbers, remembers that skid pad numbers do not translate automatically to a well balanced/great handling car. Also remember we are talking about a 2,000 pound with small block and race tires.

That Mustang is a really nice intelligent combination of speed and handling. I beleive this proves that using your brain to develop a good combination is much more important than the size of your wallet. :hail:

Besides.. we have witnesses.. lol. One of them was Mark from Lateral Dynamics. His tires are DOT legal but sticky as hell. Car felt very predictable and reacted very well.

As for the skid pad we ran several clockwise and counterclockwise then averaged the best in each direction.

Why do people think that you HAVE to spend a fortune to build a great handling car? It was fun watching the little Mustang smack around all the high dollar cars that day. About the only place it needed real improvement in was braking.

Oh, we tried like hell to get 1g but just couldn't get it to average that way. With some suspension tuning we felt it could have gotten there.

It's nice to see a Mustang II get some respect too! :thumbsup: And also that averege Joe can get his car in a magazine. Good job!

Just hard for me to imagine this car pulling similar skid numbers as a 96 lt4 vette with 315 rears. Maybe, I want try to reengineer a chassis completely

I was there to when they did the test, we were with the 65 Mustang that is in the May isuse. Alcino's car works killer, he running Hooser autocross tires that stick like glue. Also Nick, the test driver, tried real hard to break a "G".

Tires can make your car a super hero too. That’s what I learned when I was getting may azz beat in autoX by fully stock cars. Rules allow any tire that is DOT legal. So everyone runs the hoosiers and kumhos, heat cycled and shaved. Once I bought my tires I dropped my time 6 seconds on a ~55 sec course and was staying up with M3s C5s and miatas.

For the record the tires are toyo Ra1 full thread depth road race tires( not shaved or heat cycled). I bought them cause they supposedly can last 10-15,000 miles of wear. Thus allowing me to only have one set of tires. They are not the best for autoXing or drag racing, but have been great all around.

I'd sure like to hear more about the RA1's. How many miles do you have with them? How would you compare them to a Nitto 555R or Nitto 555RII?

Have you run withand without the tires. How much lateral g do you think they are worth? .05 ? Regardless, your car gives me more hope of cornering on a budget.
