BRP rear shock relocation kit and suspension setup, anyone install one on a 1st gen?
EDIT: This is for a 69 camaro
I am starting back up on my build and I would like to get some help with building and setting up my suspension. I am sure there are better combinations, but this is what I felt to be the best choice for me. not looking to be the badest out there, just have a nice ride. this is what I have so far. New OER subframe my OEM one was tweaked bad. since I bought 2 used ones which turned out to be bad I gave up and bought a reproduction. Global West upper and lower arms Global West body bushings Global West subframe connectors DSE 2" drop coil springs DSE 3" drop leaf springs - GW bushings 73 Nova 8.5 rearend rebuilt with posi 373 gears BRP rear shock relocation kit 89 Z/28 quick ratio steering box - new steering components Front brakes - C5 brakes using the C4 13" rotor and speedtech adapters Rear Brakes - BRP spacer, ls1 camaro rear disc brakes with corvette calipers Kore 3 - brake conversion lines Engine - LS1 with LS6 cam and 243 heads carb setup T56 BRP LS1 conversion motor and transmission mounts Spectra gas tank Still need the swaybar and shocks, master cylinder, brake booster - going with the corvette setup. Still need alot more but trying to build it little by little. So my first set of questions. Has anyone installed the BRP setup before? what shocks did you use for the rear and the front? Does anyone have a similar setup that has any pointers for me? I would also like to know. Looking for a relocation kit for my 72 Nova
|
I don't see the shock relocation kit on BRP's website, but I'm guessing this is an upper shock mount that connects between the factory frame rails?
I'm guessing it's a Camaro but please clarify for us what year and model of car you're working on. |
correct. it is a bar that goes in between the frame rails. I am using it on a 69 camaro. I will post pics of the unit and try to hold it in place where it needs to be to give everyone an idea of how it looks. it is not on thier website. I spoke to Jeff he mentioned they were going to redo the site soon and have it on it.
here are a few links I have found on the kit. http://www.stevesnovasite.com/forums...d.php?t=170847 http://www.pro-touring.com/showthrea...g-a-rear-shock I also spoke to Koni tech department about this, and ask for some opinions and they recommended this shock but it all depends on my final ride height. they also mentioned if I used this shock I would have to bore the holes out a bit in order to make it work. http://www.ajusa.com/KONI-8040-1027-...FROnPAodXyAATw |
After buying the kit so many more questions came to me, BRP say's the shock will be under 20 deg of tilt in and they said the factory is about 8 deg. also the shock will now be moved up in front of the axle instead of staggered. I talked to BRP about this as well as other vendors and I am so confused now and have even more questions. is the angle to much for the shock? will I have wheel hop with non staggered shocks? even if i am using the 3" DSE 175lbs leaf springs. the kit is bolt in and requires to drill a few holes in the rear frame rails, should i reinforce the rails after drilling them? I will post pictures and the install pdf when i get a chance later today or tomorrow morning. if you have any input it will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Jorge |
I have this system on my 69. It works, don't have any wheel hop, but will break the tires loose real easy(5.3ls w/heads/cam/intake). I guess i am satisfied with it, it hasn't broke or anything. but am going to put on rear suspension i bought off of kevin miller, so unitil then i don't have anything to compare it to.

I can't comment on the angle of the shocks being too much or too little, but this definitely sounds like you need to install the bar before shopping for shocks. Everyone's spring/ride height and lower shock mount combination is going to make a big difference in what length shock you select.
For mounting the bar, does the kit come with shoulder bolts that will keep you from squishing the frame rail when you torque it down? If not, I would suggest getting some and drilling your hole sizes appropriately. See Todd's (Vegas69) Payback thread for the section about mounting his swaybar for more detail. |
I didn't install it a shop did it for me. Shock length? Idk
