Wiper motor relocation
Has anyone tried to relocate their stock wiper motor to below the upper surface of the driver's side fender on a Gen 1 Camaro or 68-72 Nova?
I'm trying to figure out how to smooth that portion of the firewall without buying an expensive underdash relocation kit. I'm already buying a Vintage Air kit that will take up much of that volume under the dash. What I've come up with so far is cutting out that patch of sheet metal, mounting features included, and welding it in the concealed area inside the fender (The spot that has that stamped "X".) Then I would have to extend the actuating arm that connects the motor to the wiper linkage. Anyone taken a different route? Ben |
Anyone????? Now, don't all answer at once! :) [que crickets]

Or you could just use Rain-X and skip the wipers. :D

I was thinking that but I would rather have them just incase. RainX works pretty well but I don't want to take the chance of depending on half a nanometer of fluid to have a clear view of the road out on the Power Tour. :D

You can get a 1985 style VW Rabbit wiper motor. You will need to fabricate a bracket to hold it from the upper cowl and you will weld the end of your nova/camaro arm to the VW arm.
You can position it in the cowl and smooth it over. There is a simple re-wire needed to make it work and you are off and running. You can also obtain a later model column mounted wiper switch and use it instead of the dash mount. This gives you more room on the dash for another gauge. In my case I put a fuel pressure gauge where the wiper switch was. http://www.mcspeed.homestead.com/fil...iper_motor.JPG http://www.mcspeed.homestead.com/fil...or_mounted.JPG http://www.mcspeed.homestead.com/files/8camaro.jpg http://www.mcspeed.homestead.com/files/9camaro.jpg |
Thanks for the info. That's a pretty cool way to do it too.
I'm assuming that thick block is the bracket you're talking about, is there a specific thickness it needs to be for clearance? Do the wipers have the correct amount of travel? |

You have to play with it holding it in place by hand and moving it in and out while some jumper wires are running the wiper motor to make sure it is sitting in the sweet spot. Then, clamp and drill the pilot holes for the mounting bolts. |
Thanks, I'll look into that. Great idea!
