Ever lived in a camper in extreme cold?
For the record, I have never, ever, gone "camping". My business doesn't give me any time in the summer months to do so. Well I am building a new house and a friend had a 30' camper for sale so I told my wife, let's buy it and we will live on site while we build.
We moved in to the camper August 15th, poured the foundation Sept 22nd and I am so close to moving in I can taste it. During the warm weather it was REAL easy, cooking on the grill, hanging out outside.....well....it's been cold here in NH! I am now leaving the water on 24/7 to prevent it from freezing. This morning my son took his shower and forgot to leave the water "on" and I didn't notice. I brought him and my daughter to the bus-stop, came back in to take a shower and the water is frozen solid....lol I am one who can't function unless I take a shower first...so I have been dicking around with my wife's hair dryer and finally got a trickle, so I am waiting for it to break free so I can have my water back. It's been quite an adventure for the four of us. We've had tons of laughs, the kids will never forget it but I am bigtime ready to move in to the house!! |
Get one of these and forget about. http://reviews.homedepot.com/1999/10...ws/reviews.htm
The use very little power, I'll run mine 24/7 for a week in an insulated garage (800 s.f.) and never notice the impact on the electric bill. I'm guessing you'd be a hero with the family too. |
Heat tape on the water line???

The trailer should have had a "cold weather package" installed -- which keeps not only the running potable water from freezing - but the gray and black water tanks and lines as well.
A "skirt" around the base of the trailer - even if it was just some plywood sheets cut to be able to block the wind and capture some residual heat thru the floor etc would (should be WOOD for a pun) also help maybe. What a fun adventure! |
I have had several friends and family do this. You are supposed to build the outbuildings first. You park the trailer inside and have room for your stuff. Sounds like fun.

I haven't done anything for insulation because we are so close to moving in. Just leaving the water running creates enough friction to keep it from freezing, just have to remember to leave it ON!! My wife and the kids have had so many laughs living in this tuna can, climbing over each other, being able to get the shower going and brush your teeth WHILE sitting on the crapper. Don't get me wrong, I'm at the point where I want to be in the house REALLY bad. I also need to get out of it because I sold the camper to my well guy. He came to set my pump and says: "if you know of anyone that has a camper like that for sale, I'm looking for one".....5 minutes later it belonged to him..lol I'll have to try and post a few pics of the new house.. |
