Has anyone went to the drags with the PT style rear suspension set ups?
Has anyone really put any of the PT style rear suspensions to the test? Like i mean the DSE 4 link, the speedtech torque arm style, or any of the narrow 4 link steups. I am curious about this because i am going to make upwards of 700 hp to the tire and i would like to cut some good 60' times as well with slicks but i know that even 11 second f bodies can lift the tires way in the air with the torque arm setup. I have also heard that the narrow 4 bar allows wheel hop.

I looked through the pics and it looks like a 4 link but i didnt get any clear shots or who's rear setup it was. That car looks really clean btw. Does anyone know of anyone who used a DSE 4 link or a torque arm at the drags?

This is something I've put a hell of a lot of thought into. I'm wanting to get the car out there as much as possible and that means making it dual purpose.
I ended up going 3 link. There'll always be compromises but this this is how it looks so far:- |
To be honest thats exactly how i was thinking i was going to do mine for the last year but i since mine is not an A body or other full frame car, i was gonig to cut my back seat in two and create a console and tie it into the roll cage. lately though i have been thinking really hard about the torque arm setup. Your work looks very nice btw.

I have had my Nova on the drag strip. on AutoX tires, the falken 615's at the airport here in town, so there were a couple handicaps at the start line. The car ran 4 runs @ 12.14, .16 , .15 and an .18 all at around 114mph, it has an LS2 550hp plus 100 hp Nitrous the mph suggests that if there was traction it could run a mid 11 something.
Is it the ultimate drag race suspension NO but then the ultimate drag race suspension will SUCK on the road course. The Torque arm is better on the road course than the drag strip I think. but when you can do both well, I think that is a bonus. |
I ran 11.95 at 120 with a 1.9xx 60 foot. With more experience, better air, and the changes I made to the trans, I think I could've dropped a few tenths but I never made it back before I sold the car. This was on road race tires. I often thought about buying a spare set of wheels, skinnies and drag tires, unhooking the sway bar, adjusting the shocks, taping off the grill and really seeing what she could do.... :D

I have a basically stock 4 link in my GTO, with Global West lower arms and Edelbrock uppers. Driving down the drag strip is all about the launch. Lowering the 60' time by 0.10 seconds will generally give you 0.20 to 0.30 seconds on the big end. I can consistently knock down 1.8x 60' times with Falken 615 tires. I drive around the water, do a short burnout to clean the tires, and stage. From there it is a matter if feathering the throttle and slipping the clutch to get the car out of the hole.

The biggest issue with a suspension set up for road courses vs the strip is they typically lack Anti-squat. Too much AS generally yields brake hop. To get a higher AS many setups will place the lower link at a greater angle causing roll steer.
You can race just about anything, it all comes down to how well you want to do. |
What I've noticed about suspensions set up to handle being used at the drag strip is that they may give a few tenths in e.t. compared to a dedicated drag set up. However, they also tend to be a lot more consistent and repeatable inspite of ambient conditions.
I also think its worth mentioning that regardless of suspension set up, you are going to struggle getting a 30-35 series tire to hook up with high power compared to the taller sidewall, 60+ aspect ratios of drag tires. |
