Projects: A Beginner's Guide (Section 1: Price)
 

syborg tt's 2nd gen thread was such a great idea, it spawned another in my head. An informal guide to building street machines!

I will start: What is the most you have spent on a car you knew was going to be a project? Was it $200 for a shell so rusty looking at it gave you tetinus; or did you spend $40k for a finished car but the resto was so dated you did not mind spending another $50k to update it? Another words what do you think the ceiling for a "Project Car" should be and why?

I think this will generate some great discussions. Section 2 might be: When not to modify a barn find or other original discoveries.

The ceiling, to me, depends on a persons financial status or willingness to spend. For example, the ceiling for a guy making $50k a year may only be $30k. But, that guy may very well have dreams of a $100k car, but knows he can afford it or won't spend $7k on a set of Baer brakes. Now, take a guy who earns $500k an up, his ceiling may be a $150k car with custom frame, top of the line 3-piece wheels, custom interior and top notch paint job.

True. Which is why I was hoping those who have done it will give their opinion based on their experience. We all know there are those shooting for the Riddler or SMOY that have a very high budget. And those compensating for low points in their psychy that do the same. But then their are millionaires out there that follow the same strategies when they buy themselves life's rewards as they did when they made themselves millionaires and don't see the need to buy a limited ZL1 motor unless it enhances return on investment.

Some of those guys frequent this board and we all would very much appreciate their approach to selecting a new project.
