Body prep help needed in socal - 91792
 

I need to prep the car to spray primer. The car is a 69 camaro. I would take it to a shop but it is just to pricey. I understand it is labor intensive, so I would like to see if there is anyone around socal 91792 that would be able to help me, guide me on what to do at home to prep the car for primer. Car has been dipped about 6 years ago now and been sitting in my garage since. Metal is still in good shape very light surface rust in a few spots. I have posted before and got some great feedback but I just would like a bit more help incase I run into any issues. I would hate to not do it right and have issues after I paint the car down the road. Any help would be great. The car purpose will be to drive around town, shows, ect. I am not looking to be best in show. I also need to replace some body panels, but my priority is primer first then body work.

Explain dipped. Are you saying it was acid dipped to remove paint and rust?

Yes the car was acid dipped then neutralized and now has a phosphate coating to keep it from rusting, if you follow the link from above it will show you pics of the current condition.

If you are in bare metal, I would call up SPI and get there epoxy primer. It is a great product! They can hook you up with their cleaner, and everything you need. Hit the car with some 80 grit DA, wipe down and spray.

what he said ^^^^ ya im only 18 but i know my stuff. my nova is the same way i stripped it to bare metal then wiped aspho (sulfuric acid) to prevent rest. What im doing now is starting to prime my car. so wat i do is hit the panel with 80 grit DA then if theres any spots that still have a lil rust or tiny pitting i take the sulfuric acid again with a rag wipe the panel and let it dry. once its dry the little surface rust should turn black. hit the panel with 80 again real quick wipe with wax and grease remover and hit it with epoxy primer. hope this helps.

ps. theres a billion and two different ways of doing just about everything. just keep that in mind. everyone has there own process of gettin the job done.

Thanks for all the Help guys. I went ahead and ordered SPI epoxy primer and SPI wax cleaner. I will need to pick up a D/A and some 80grit sand paper. I'm trying to find a good deal. The epoxy primer and cleaner ran me 200.00 :( Anyone every use eastwood to order tools or products? thinking about getting the tools from them.


I have another question about spraying the epoxy primer. Can I pick up a home depot husky spray gun to use or should a spend a bit more on a better gun? When I spray the primer, it will be in my garage how do you guys keep the overspray not floating onto other garage items. should I create a plastic barrier around the car? or is it not that bad and I am over thinking this?
