4L80E in 78 -87 G-Body

Hey Guys,

I'm looking at possibly upgrading to a 4L80E in my 1985 Buick Regal. The car is currently equipped with a TH200.

Has anyone done this conversion? What if any fabrication is invlolved?

Need input ASAP.

You will need a trans controller and a TPS sensor adapter if your car is carbureted.

Thanks Steve, that's just what I was after. The main reason for me wanting to go to this is to get your paddle shifter. Question for you, is it correct for me to assume that my stock steering wheel will not mate up with your shifter?

Does a controller and your shifter also work with a 4L60E? My research is saying that the 4L60E will be an easier swap since the 700R4's dimensions are close to the TH200.

That's great!! Thank you.

Correct on both counts. You will need an aftermarket steering wheel and it will work with a 4L60E. The '60 is a bit easier to install and a bit less expensive since cores are much more common. However, you really need to do your homework to make sure you get a true high performance trans. Much like a proper 200, modifications are extensive. The current issue of Chevy Hi-Performance has an excellent article showing the proper build-up of a 4L60E by Monster Transmission in FL. On the other hand, you can dig a 4L80E out of the dirt and it will handle 500HP. Modified and properly calibrated, a 4L80E can handle in excess of 1000HP

Based on that info, I will pursue the 4L80E. Looks like this will be an expensive swap.

Yup. It ain't cheap. But you'll only pay once.
