bare metal
In the next weeks I will prime my car. I will sand the edp coated panels to bare metal and spray with Dupont 1220 primer to seal it but i've got some spots that have surface rust. I want to neutralize it before spray. What can I do to prepare the surface.
In the past, I sprayed sandblaster surface rust with ppg epoxy and 1 year later the rust came out and I dont want to have the same issues on this project. Thx, Louis |
If it's just surface rust, sand it off. If there is pitting then wire wheel, media blast or whatever you have access to. If you use a chemical on it be sure to clean it thoroughly or it will cause you even more problems.

its just surface, they are all new panels

So what happened with the other car?...you got it media blasted and then did epoxy and it rusted through in a year? Did you epoxy it right after it was blasted or wait awhile? Did you epoxy over visible surface rust?
The big concern with any chemical treatment on the metal is that it adds one additional step that may leave residue that may not react well with your paint of choice..... if its surface rust, hit it with 80 grit on a DA, clean the metal off and spray epoxy.... |

Ospho is incompatible with some epoxy primers.
