Paint stripping and prepping
Anyone ever done a full submersion chemical strip on their car? Have they had any problems with "acid leaching" from crevasses? Anyone had their car bead blasted? Have they had any problems with dust in the nooks and crannies not coming out until later? What is the best method of stripping a car down to bare metal and taking off any previous bondo that was on their so I can get a good look at what the car is going to need in terms of straightening?

I wasn't sure since I've had so many conflicting opinions although your son mentioned that you do paint and body for a living so I think I will take your advice. Where can I buy aircraft paint stripper? I guess I will need to completely tear down the body. You know, doors off trunk lid and entire front clip. As far as the inside of the car, would you suggest I also strip this down to bare metal? After I pulled the front fenders and hood off I noticed that the driver side cowl had been dented in. What do you think would be the best method for straigtening this? Do you think it would be best to just weld in a new section rather than trying to straighten the section? I included a few photos so you can see the damage. I put two photos of the damaged drivers side and two photos of the correct passengers side.

I get it at an auto parts store ...........But ive seen the same thing sold at wal-mart........Its in a blue can like what lacer thinner comes in and it have a airplane on it.......If you have any ?'s about using it just write me back .

For straiting that....If the kick panels are out you might be able to get a little out with a hammer and dolly....Or you might need to get your hands on a LENCO(dent puller) It like welds it to the metel...And has a slide hammer on it.....and you can just break it off.... I would get everything out off the car....Its kinda messy stuff......
Any ? just let me know -Paul  |
paul, that is the way that i went . you need help let me no.

Hmmmmm.......
Sparky: Thanks for your effort and time! Although I'm still not convinced about dipping since the article you posted referred to "parts" rather than the whole shell of the car. I know you mentioned that you did it to your '67 Camaro and haven't seen any acid leaching out but you still haven't painted your car, if I am correct, so this is where you would really see it.
Lil427: Ditto! thanks for the post! Paul: Although I know it will be more work for me and much more messy I think I will go the hand stripping method. From what your son says, you do paint and body every day so I'm sure you've seen the effects of chemical dipping! As far as the metal straightening, it looks like the car was side swiped and the point of impact was at the cowl so I am hoping that the A-pillar is still in alignment along with where the door post is. Would you suggest I take it to a body shop or have a qualified body man come over to my place to verify this? Since I will be going panel by panel, what would be the best method to prime the surface against rust? I know that e-coating is probably the best method but since I will be doing this at home what would the next best method be or do they sell epoxy coating in a can? I already gutted the interior of the car so there is nothing left other than the steering wheel to steer the car around when I move it. I think the previous owner may have stripped the car to bare metal so do you think that a DA sander would get it down to metal fairly quickly if this is the case? One last question, what is the difference in the store bought stripper(Home Depot) and the aircraft stripper? Again, thanks to all of you that posted for the time and effort that you have put into helping me get closer to finishing my car! |
Sorry for not getting back sooner.........Do you have An air compresser? If so you could DP the car.....I would have a body man look at it and see if he can do anythin with it...If i missed and ?'s just ask me in your next post...
-Paul  |
