Subframe Advice Please
3 Attachment(s)
Hi All,
Well, nothing is turning out easy with my build. I keep finding more and more stuff I need to fix that I didn't think I'd have to do initially. I've swapped stuff and restored vehicles before so it wasn't totally unexpected, just disappointing. Anyway, my stock subframe isn't in very good shape. I know it can be fixed but I'm not sure if it's worth it. So, I'm posting a few pics and asking your advice. At least 3 of the mounting stands need to be welded up or replaced, the drivers side middle mount stand looks like it's bent up a bit, and the frame springs out about 1" from where it's supposed to be in the rear when the transmission crossmember is taken out. There are also some "dents" that may or may not be there from the factory. I haven't seen enough of these to know, so maybe someone here could tell me. They are in the pictures, just back from the middle stands. |
I would look for a replacement. I found an almost perfect bare subframe for $100 local.

Personally
I would go with an aftermarket frame. You will be happier in the long run.

For everyone's information, my initial plan was to keep a stock subframe and then upgrade to ridetech stuff when I had the money.
I'm not completely opposed to going with an aftermarket frame and it would make sense if I can't find a used stock frame that's in good condition. However; I think that I would jump on a used stock frame if I could find one close, or for the right money with shipping. If I bought a new stock subframe, I think I'd pay close to 1k and then probably have another $600 in it if I replace all the wear items. My front disc brakes are practically new and my wheel bearings are new but I think a lot of the joints leave something to be desired. I'd also go for a used aftermarket frame if one came up for sale..... I'd think there would be a lot of used stock type frames out there for sale from all those that upgrade though. If I was doing this over a year or two it wouldn't be much of an issue but I'm trying to get it back on the road by this spring and money over that limited time is a problem. |
