Air hybrid engine
I ran across this and thought it was a cool:

From what I gather, half the cylinders are simply compressors. It's painfully similar to using a supercharger...pressurizing the incoming air/fuel charge before it's fired. I don't see a huge advantage or any groundbreaking engineering here. Frankly, I'd prefer to use all the power strokes I can get in every cylinder, and use a supercharger if pressurized intake charge is the goal.
