Shipping A Car
I could have sworn there was a thread about this but searching turned about a bunch of BS about how much it costs to ship parts.
I need to send a car from my place in Sacramento to my dad in Las Vegas. It's a '66 Toronado. It runs and moves under it's own power, but leaks PS fluid like a mastiff at a fence. It's solid but not very pretty, so an open transport is fine. What should I expect to pay? Last time I had a car shipped was 5 years and $450 ago. It got lost for two weeks and I was certain I would never see it again; I have no desire to go through that again. I requested a quote from Reliable but I have a feeling they are a little more champagne and caviar than I care to be. Thanks! |
What about a pickup truck with a uhaul trailer. Or he'll just find someone who has a setup and ask them?
|
I think you'll be looking at about $800-$1200, depending on which service you go with.
|
I got a quote back from Reliable, much faster than expected, and it came in at $975. Not as bad as I was expecting. Any other trusted services I should check with?
|
Fred at Councours said 775.00 if you are not in a hurry. He is booked thru most of May.
|
Thanks Charlie, I had not heard of Concours before. I called and left them a message.

These guys are a broker who just puts the job up for bid and they might not want one as leaky as you describe but they hauled a car from Austin Tx to Orange CA for me for $525.
http://cowboystransport.com/ It was on one of those open hauler semis with 10 other cars. |
Thanks Rob, I'll check 'em out. Maybe if I make it a diaper it'll be okay. It only leaks when it's running!
|
I think you would be at least half of the Reliable Quote if you go through a Broker and use Open Transport. Tell them about the leak - they will keep it on the bottom level so the other cars don't get sprayed.

Thanks for all the input guys. Missed a window with a fairly priced closed carrier by a couple hours today.
Scheduled my pickup today through Montway. Quoted $579 door to door on an open carrier. I have some hoops for them to jump through so that pickup will work with my schedule. I will report back on my experience. It's always the little things that make selling (or buying) a house such a headache. |
