Vin and cowl tag rivets
 
Had to replace upper dash and upper cowl due to major rust under windshield. What kinda rivets do I use to transfer tags?

Surely I'm not the first person to do this. Looks like special rivets on vin tag.

It's not that big of a deal -- unless you're going for restoration judging... I've even just riveted 'em on before.

People act like somebody is going to put you in prison --- like you removed the tag off your mattress.

The State issued VIN tag on my '32 is just riveted in place. Had it inspected at the state last week... nobody said anything except that the numbers matched the title.

Now -- if you're trying to scam somebody - that's a different issue.

Guys listen I'm definetly not trying to scam anyone. I've owned this car for 30yrs and just now fixing it right. I got it figured out how to do it thanks for all your help. I can see where people would be hesitant to discuss it.

I believe www.Trimtags.com has them, He sells new tags so he has to have the rivets.

I picked up a set of trim tag rivets from year one it's the vin tag I was having problems with. When you replace the upper cowl and top of the dash you have to replace the vin unless you do some fancy cutting and welding. To me it was easier to replace the whole upper dash because of rust and it wasn't worth the risk of it leaking later after Paint. It's fixed now so thanks for all you advice and comments.

word of advice:

just keep your mouth shut at or near the dmv about any removal/ modification of the tags!!

We had a guy here locally that had the same situation and opened his mouth about it at the dmv, then it got blow out of per portion about it being a "altered vin tag", wanted law enforcement to get involved, etc etc

your car, your original vin tag
just get the "correct style" rivets, reinstall the tags, I am sure that you will repaint over them, and be quiet and be done with it!

There was an episode of "Chasing Classic Cars" where they were at an auction (out east I think) and the DMV made a huge deal of the "new looking" vin rivets on some of the cars at auction. The idiots stopped the auction and it almost didn't happen because they couldn't get it through their thick bureaucratic heads that people need to remove and re-install them during restorations.

So, with that, and my own multiple negative experiences with the DMV (not relating to VIN's) I agree with the above recommendation. Not because your doing anything wrong, but because the Government is stupid.
