ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has been quite amusing recently and while I'm glad it is doing a remarkable job to elevate ALS awareness, I'm not so sure many really understand how debilitating and devastating ALS really is. My 13 year old daughter and numerous friends have all taken the challenge as have numerous adult friends. Again, the awareness is great and contributions are increasing, though it's left me wondering how many are just avoiding the contribution, why not make it trend to get doused and contribute even if it's just a dollar or two? I know someone who's in the latter stages of ALS and this video really exemplifies the cold cruel realities of ALS.

Its great that it brought attention to ALS and all but there is water shortage in the Western part of the country.
I wanna see a slap in the face challenge take over.

Wake up America to all the problems we have here.

And I noticed many are leaving the "ice" out of the bucket.

Sieg, I was thinking the same thing. I think the process of getting the ice over the head keeps a lot of money from being raised. Yes, I think it should be bucket and then pay. Most seem to be doing it now, to just say they did it. I don't know.......

We had a friend come down with ALS - in 18 months he was gone. He was 48 years old. It's a hideous decease that leaves your brain functioning while it paralyzes the rest of your body... You're basically trapped in your own body as it goes away on you. To me - that makes it a horror. Greg Brooks ran a very successful Chevrolet dealership... and was a hard worker and just an all around good guy. He had a beautiful '62 Fawn Beige/ Fawn Beige fuelie... and a killer '57 Cameo.

This Ice Challenge is a good thing and it's raised awareness and money... Whatever works.

Personally I donate in Greg's honor to The Moyer Foundation. That was Greg's wish. Jamie Moyer was a Seattle Mariner Pitcher... Typing this I misidentified another Moyer (Paul) whom we're friends with Paul was with the Seahawks as a player and later as a secondary coach... JAMIE was with the Mariners.

I dont know the exact numbers, but this time last year I think the organization that receives the donations had around $1.9 million. This year so far they are up to $22.9 million. Those numbers came from CBS so they are prolly pretty reliable. So I would think alot of people are donating and doing the challenge just to have fun.

Got into a discussion with a friend about the same thing. We don't have water to spare!

they should dump the amount of money their donating on their heads instead of the water (charlie sheen did this). Saves water and actually gets money to the cause.

My daughters and thier friends did it but, you have to make at least a $10 donation if you do it, if not it's more $.

Don't get me wrong, the awareness is awesome as is the increase in contributions. I just think a little more commitment considering how viral this has went could produce phenomenal results. If every bucket dumped to date had a $5 contribution attached I'm guessing it would be a big number.

As noted in the video 'only' 30,000 are cursed and that number doesn't get much attention.......the horror should invoke a mercy rule of sorts. It truly is a gut wrenching disease to face once diagnosed. :(

I just watched a special on the guy that started it. It was my understanding that a major portion of the folks donate regardless. They go ahead and do the ice bucket anyway to show support (or just to be on facetube)...
