20 ton shop press, can I move the hydraulic pump
 

I recently bought a 20 ton shop press. Right now, the hydraulic pump sit perpendicular to the press, so stick straight out. Is there reason I can't move the pump so it's sitting parallel to the press.

Here's a pic of my press and the pump I'm talking about. Ignore the disaster of a mess, I'm on the process of reorganizing the shop so I can fit a 74 Bronco in with my Acadian.

This is how it sits now. It's annoying as it has to sit quite a way from the wall. I'd like to mount it vertically. Would that effect the performance of it. I know jacks sit vertically so thought why not try

Think about how the leverage is applied to the pump handle, how it's going to move the press, and how it will be when trying to hold a piece in position.

Some cylinders can't be mounted vertically....being as that one is mounted horizontally. I'm willing to bet it can't be done vertically. Worth a shot trying thou

that one should be ok, its the same type they use on the engine hoists.

Harbor freight sells a smaller pump for the porta power kit. Also the air over hydraulic units aren't to expensive if you are pressed for space.

Thanks guys. I've been rearranging my shop the past couple weeks and have found a spot where it fits nicely as is.

The hose end has to be pointing down. If it points up, it will try to pump the air out of the reservoir & into the ram. I made a press where I put the pump on its own floor stand with the hose/pump end about an inch lower than the fill end. Then I could put it anywhere I wanted.
