that glasspack sound
 

I want to avoid that horrible sound when I build my mufflers. So, what causes that sound? I'm hoping I can simply make some round or oval mufflers with stainless packing and a perforated tube. Parts will be sourced from Cone. I'm not sure how long I'll be able to make each muffler, but I'm shooting for at least a foot. System will include an x pipe and be 2.5 inch diameter.

Not sure of the sound you refer to...maybe the crackling/ popping when you back off? I think that is a combination of smaller diameter tailpipes & slightly rich mixture. Others may have different thoughts on this.
You're going to make your own mufflers? Any reason you don't just buy a set? Just curious...

Have you "heard" of Porter Mufflers?

They were the original steel packs from the 1930's. They went out of business, but were resurrected a few years ago. Their construction is about what you described.

That glasspack sound I'm referring to is usually found on redneck trucks that are way too slow for how loud they are. It's a rapid fire banging a giant tin can sound. Like this red truck

I'm building my headers so I figured I'd build my mufflers, too. Most off the shelf mufflers hang too low on a 2nd gen. So I thought I'd try my hand at making something designed to fit the car.

I've heard some of those trucks, and thought they must be running straight pipes. Gawd, that must get old after awhile.

Magnaflows & Borla's seem to be the "in" brands these days.
My Flowmasters, which were the big thing, say 15-20 years ago, seem to be yesterdays news. They sound good to me, but what do I know... I'm an old fart.
Hell, I started with Cherry Bomb's & Thrush's. And let's not forget "Purple Hornies"!

The Porter website has some sound clips, if that helps you.

But a lot of it comes down to the cam timing & compression.

The two trucks sound like exhaust leaks to me.... NASTY...



The Borla sound is deeper and richer.... and they don't have the dreaded drone while cruising.


The Flowmasters have a "raspier" sound... A bit more "mechanical" sound.


The MagnaFlows are deeper and richer sounding than the Flowmasters...


I think a lot of the sound is not only brand specific - but model specific within a brand -- i.e., Flowmaster 50's sound way different than Flowmaster 40's... but also diameter of the exhaust -- placement - and compression/camming of the motor. A wimpy ass motor is going to be wimpy sound regardless - and a cammed up motor is going to sound pretty good regardless. X pipes change the sound - Resonators can change the sound.... The length of exhaust AFTER the muffler can change the sound.

Ferrari actually has an entire department that does nothing but work on the exhaust for their cars... they want that "signature" sound.

I love Magnaflow mufflers and Dynomax or any turbo muffler really. I want deep until I romp on it. My biggest problem is I can't get anything thinner than 4" in a muffler that I like. Going one inch thinner really would make a big difference in ground clearance. So, I'm going to experiment and build my own with the goal of making a deep sounding muffler. If I mess up, oh well. It may work in my favor. Won't know if I don't try.

Loved my glasspacks when I was 16-21... My buddy and I both had early 80's Monte Carlos with dual side exhaust. Mine had a 327, his had a 454. We raced around this tiny little Iowa farm town at who knows what time at night. Then we got the hell out of dodge. :lol:

I think there was o'dark thirty and triple digit mph last time I heard that story.
