Clear coating raw steel
 

I want to clear some interior parts, no paint, raw steel or brushed. I remember back in the day the motorcycle shop I worked at had an issue with the parts yellowing over time. Were we doing something wrong or using a poor product or is that what happens?

What do I use?
FYI, I'm more of a aerosol painter than a real paint gun.

Over time it will fail. I have sen it done with both spray can and spray gun with negative results.

I'm using Krylon satin clear on most of the 'artsey' welding pieces I've fabbed in the last 3+ years.......haven't noticed any yellowing yet. The core supports in the Camaro are also Krylon satin clear and the engine heat hasn't caused any yellowing yet. I'm very satisfied with the overall characteristics of the product.

These were cleared in May of 2013........

Hey what the heck do I know, I'm just a guy running a millon dollar a month body shop!!!

But I used to play a Tech Rep for the largest coatings company.

There are two ways you can do it.

First Sikkens "AkzoNobel" makes a clear that can go directly to bare metal but it's not cheap and only comes in gallons for the clear and hardener and reducer. LV650 is what it's called, it doesn't state in the TDS sheet that it goes direct to metal but it has been tested and works fine. It should be listed soon that it will go DTM or at least that is what I was told.

I believe House of Color or Eastwood makes one as well but can't remember for sure.

Sieg those core supports look great, that's about the look I'm going for. I guess none of the parts would be horribly difficult to pull and redo every 3-4 years if need be.

Thanks, at $4 can, very forgiving to apply, and fast drying, it's hard to argue for those on a pro-tinkering budget. :D

You can also powder coated them with clear coat. If they can handel the heat from the oven.
On tech label says that its UV-resistance.

I believe DuPont makes a etching clear.
