Tablet in place of gauges?
 

Hey Guys,
I wanted to see what you guys think of using a smalle (say 8" or so) 4g lte tablet instead of running the traditional gauges you would have. I know a lot of guys use Racepak's in place of gauges but was curious why I dont see more tablets mounted into dashboards. I know a lot of the moder fuel injection engines could use this for both tuning and displaying and customizing what you see in front of you. With the capability of some of todays tuning software it would be pretty versitile. What do you guys think? Pros/cons, things I am not thinking about?

With my holley EFI I have a tablet, pretty neat but hidden usually. Plan on also running gauges eventually. But man, it's just about taste. The spirit of the muscle car for me is in the classic interior and smell of vinyl and leather, keys hanging from the dash or column, old school gauges, even that dim evil glow the dash has at night lol. Some guys with the all steel autometer dashes or tablets and full tube chassis..... Idk, to each his own but a tablet for a dash seems like it might detract from what you loved about your car in the beginning. And I got tons of non-stock parts lol, just my 2 cents brotha.

Looks good in a new corvette tho!

I see where you are coming from. I guess I'm leaning more toward functionality now a days

I do know if you look over on yellowbullet a lot of guys are using tablets as dashes. Maybe take some ideas from them, wanted to contribute something at least lol. I got a lot of my holley efi/tablet deal from a huge thread over there on it. I have an iPad but went with windows 8 (has to be full version not RT), so it can run my ISIS wiring and my Holley efi. I think the 4g thing is a cool idea unless it can just automatically pair to your phone for data etc. I'll def have a tablet in the car, and am using it for gauges for now, just not on the dash.

I like it removable etc in case I am tuning a table or a friend in the passenger seat is. Just something to keep in mind.

I looked into this as well and went a different route. I found that it was pretty difficult to get everything working the way I would like it. I mean, if you have a tablet, you might as well have that control audio too right? But they don't work very well for integrating into car audio. Then I thought, heck, what if I find a head unit that can run anything I'd like? At that point I looked into Car Pc's and E3io in particular.

In the end, I went with Dakota Digital gauges and I decided I didn't want to spend that much on a E3iO car pc and went with an android powered head unit from China instead. That's right, an actual android head unit. Basically a tablet connected to a double din radio.

I'm still working on my custom center console. That's where the new double din headunit will live. I can run my OBD2 adapter via usb or bluetooth to the head unit to display extra gauges there or run any other android dash software like dashcommand. It can also do anything a tablet can do and anything a radio can do. I'll have a reverse camera and a front DVR camera as well when I'm done, all integrated.

Anyway, it received it within a week and have been bench testing it. So far it's great for the price. I've got one of the micro SD slots filled with a 64gb card and as much music as I can stuff on that. When I get it installed in the car completely I'll have to see how it works but I think it will be really good.

If you went with something like e3i0's offering, you could put HPtuners right in it and never need an extra computer to tune your car. You can also get the touchscreen separate from the computer so you could actually install the screen in your dash if you'd like.

Later (supposedly this year) Parrot is coming out with their latest android head unit (Parrot RNB6) that's supposed to be the bomb.....but after it's appearance at the consumer electronics show it's been vapor ware.
