Denatured Alcohol
 

I hand stripped my paint then DA 80 then DA 180 it's very shiny and clean. My ? Is can I use denatured alcohol to wipe down just to clean the dust or what ever is flying around in the garage while I'm working in the before I DP proxy? Thanks in advance!

Yes you can. It is most commonly used as a glass cleaner, however. I went over mine with lacquer thinner before I sprayed epoxy to my bare metal. The applicator is important also. Use something as lint free as possible. Be mindful that the metal at this stage will flash rust quickly, because all oils are gone from the surface. Acetone will work well also.

Just a warning about wiping metal with lacquer thinner, it can affect adhesion. It is better to us a urethane reducer. SPI strongly recommends against lacquer thinner prior to epoxy.

I would agree with this ---- every "chemical" leaves behind "something" -- you want to make CERTAIN that something is compatible with the other products you intend to use. Think of paint as a system not a stand alone product.

Also -- there's a difference between "wiping off" and "smearing around".... it's a difference in knowledge and skill. Most people just soak a rag/cloth and run it all over which just thins out the crap they're trying to remove. They're really just spreading it all over the place. Actually cleaning and removing contaminates is done by wiping - flipping the cloth/rag - wiping - folding it again or getting new and continuing that process. It's not CLEAN until you can wipe and have no color change on the cloth/rag you're using.

If you just want it dusted - and aren't ready for painting - then it doesn't really make any difference what you're using -- except that if you put some chemical (anything) on it - then that WILL need to be removed prior to any coatings put on.

I use PPG DX330 Acryli-clean Wax and Grease remover...

I use alcohol or reducer if I am in a pinch.

I've never used SPI products, yet I'm only an hour from them. I'm definately not a painter. I'm only telling what my painter told me to do. He urged me NOT to use my reducer, due to cost, yet he said it would be fine if I did, so I went with lacquer thinner, which again, he said would be fine. I used Valspar DTM epoxy/sealer/surfacer primer.
Totally agree with Mr. Weld on the application process. Cleanliness is key to a quality paint job.

I'm blowing it off good using two rags. One to wipe with wet not soaked mad then one right behind it until it's clean. Just paranoid with wax n grease remover on bare metal. A paint rep said not to use it before epoxy it can create problems. He said just blow it off good then your good.guess you can read to much and get confused!!!

You should definitely check out SPI for their customer service if nothing else. I've been very happy with their products so far, although I am far from a pro. Their forum has helped me a ton, learning how to prep various products and tips for the most solid foundation. Price seems to be reasonable as well.
