Anyone driven the Nurburgring on a public Touristfahrten session?
 

I'm going to be within about 4 hours of the Ring at the end of the month and want to take a day to drive it.

I've been reading up online including http://www.nurburgring.org.uk/index.html#.VcrFKrUhEYQ which I think is the go to site.

There appears to be 4 main companies that rent track cars though they all classify RWD as intermediate/advanced cars for people experienced on the ring. Given that I have lots of experience driving a high powered RWD car on tracks and zero driving a FWD on anything other than a freeway I worry more about not driving a RWD car...

Anyhow, would be great to hear of any first hand accounts and tips from folks here.

I was over testing the Z/28 at the Nurburgring and our shock guy wanted to drive the track. He rented a small FWD car for 4 laps. I forgot the compainy, but he had a blast and it all seemed to go well. No dramma.

I think he went late in the day when the traffic was light.

If you spend a lot of time driving the Nurburgring in a game like Gran Turismo it will help a lot to learn the track. Most of our guys who go over spend lots of time on Gran Turismo to get the line down. It is very close to the real track.

I can ask my buddy what compainy he used if it would help.

I haven't driven it, but I have been taken around the circuit in the BMW 'Ring Taxi Program - M5 BMW's driven by professional test drivers who have clocked up hundreds of laps around the 'Ring. They strap you in and give you a fast lap - 8/10th's effort according to the BMW driver I went with.

It is a FAST ride and very enjoyable. They also rent cars to take around the 'Ring on that website.

Thanks Mark. I've been watching lots of youtube videos and practicing on GT5. It is such a huge track to memorize and with most turns blind I'm coming to appreciate the nickname green hell a little more than I have before. I'm now leaning towards one of the small hatchbacks which have lower top ends but should help me avoid getting into trouble and based on video's I've seen of other's laps these small FWD hatchbacks can still pull 1.2-1.3 g's in a corner which is damn fun.

I've seen a few of those videos. Looks like a white knuckled ride for sure!

When I was over there I arrived too late in the day to take the ring taxi or rent a car or bike. Next time.
