1966 Fastback track toy - for my 10 month old

The owner of my company who is also a huge car nut decided to sell of most of his collection. He was big into the spec mustang world challenge series for many years.

I've always wanted a 65/66 Fastback even though most are old tired V8's that are bone stock but I just loved the lines and the look. He happened to have a 66 that his wife used for shelby track days. It's been sitting for 10yrs and we came to a price and I had to have it. So I left Dublin CA, at 6AM and drove to Huntington Beach and picked it up. I also sold this to my wife as this would be our daughters first car =)

It will mostly be a track / autocross car only, I've got the Nova for Friday night duty. I'm setting up the car for Cam T SCCA autocross. I know my tire width will be a major limiting factor in that series considering all the top dogs are running 305's or wider squared + full chassis etc but I will have fun with it and for my budget I will be ecstatic if I get the car mid pack.

So here she is day one picking her up.

Got her home and started tearing it apart! What else do you do when you buy a running car but make it not run..:bang:

http://i1307.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1dkh5h3r.jpg

started with the cooling system.. new water pump, new C&R radiator / fans/ t-stat.

While I waited for the radiator to be built.. started tackling the fuel system.

It had a fuel cell so we pulled that and started spot welding 40yrs of people drilling holes in the trunk.

added a base coat and some por 15 to get a base coat on the trunk and prevent any rust.

all the wiring is being ripped out now and redone.

All new stainless fuel lines are being made and relocating the fuel pump so it doesn't hit the pan hard rod.

I live in the SF bay and fortunate to have Mike Maier in my back yard. It goes to him in two weeks for the full catalog. If i'm lucky maybe he will throw in a sticker =)

Will update you as I make progress

Wow that is a very nice looking car (and model !). I'm thinking you got a decent deal from your boss as good condition '65 fastbacks are getting quite expensive. Try not to cut it up too bad ! (this coming from someone who tube framed a Mustang that has nothing left but the roof and a-pillars, but it was a cookie cutter '67 notchback)

Nice car! Sounds like you've got a great plan laid out for the car, too. Good luck with it!

No doubt, Herb. I have driven my Chevelle once. I drove it from Birmingham to my shop, and started the disassembly. That was almost four years ago. My wife still thinks I'm nuts....

Love the car Nate and I can't wait to see what you do with it. Mike will help get you all sorted out and hooked up!....Watch out for some of the NorCal Shelby guys, they tend to have too much fun!

Some updates to the progress.

Finished new Cooling system:

We went with a custom C&R radiator that had both the fill and return on the passenger side. It was pricey but at least I don't have to worry about a long lower radiator hose. We also had them use side mounts on the radiator apposed to top.

New T-Stat housing / New high flow water pump / New radiator / Fans / harness. Done!

Next up is Fuel system.

We pulled out everything old ran new lines from trunk to front with a feed / return.

patched up the hundred holes in the trunk and laid down a fresh coat of Por 15 and started reassembling.

Feed out of tank

New pump setup - shut off valve / filter / inline pump

new fuel pressure regulator with Return setup

finished product

road test went great no leaks, I do have a slight miss that feels fuel related so i'm going to be pulling the carb off and sending it to Competition Carbs in Reno to have them hot tank it, and work it over a little bit for the road course. I've already done Plugs / wires / coil / cap etc.

Now the car is at Mike M for suspension disassemble.

Well wanted to give everyone an update. The car is moving along steadily at Mikes shop.

We found a couple things that needed to be redone from the previous owner which is no surprise.

We also decided to start fresh with wiring so the entire car is being re-wired. It looks like a rat nest currently under my dash.

I went with the full catalog at Mikes.

Front
(MOD kit) + LCA / JRI shocks
Willwood superlite 6 piston, thermalock pistons
new shock tower brace
clean up old shock towers

Rear
Panhard Rod
Subframes
bilstien shocks
willwood superlite 4 piston , thermalock pistons
Mikes steel leafs

Interior
New gauges / remove stereo make gauge panel
new wiring entire car
new seat brackets (i'm 6'2 so we are being as creative as possible to get the drive seat low and still be adjustable

Motor
Shield fuel lines
KRC powersteering
Pro Series Carb

snapped a few pictures today as i stopped by the shop.

the rear suspension is 90% done, waiting on leafs and mount brake kits.

Also got a pic of the passenger floor pan for mounting the Sparco's
