1970 Z28
I purchased a 1970 z28 it has a 383 alum head stroker motor with a 4l80e transmission.
I want to put a ls3 with a t56 in the car. This car has vintage air installed also. Here is my question and appreciate all the help I can get cause I know nothing about cars nothing at all. LOL If I bought this motor right here just for instance http://houston.craigslist.org/pts/5368735912.html what else will I need to buy to make the ls swap work? I mean everything have to buy like ecm, alternator, and anything else. Also can vintage air be compatible with the newer LS motors? I am trying to work out a budget to make this happen. Also any shops on here that do this type of thing because will be paying for it to happen I do not work on cars. I appreciate any feed back or help you can give me. |
I suggest some reading before you spend anything:

Your questions are best answered if you post them in the LSx forum, but here are my answers/opinions:
-Yes, that motor will work. You will need ECU, wiring harness (either reworked OEM, or from aftermarket companies like BP Harness, PSI or Speartech). You will also need a DBW throttle for that engine. -Vintage air will be compatible with that motor. You will need to get a mounting bracket that works with your application. You will also need brackets for alternator/power steering pump as well. You can get the entire set up from Holley/Vintage Air/Drive Junky. There are other companies that make the brackets as well. -You will also need motor/trans mounts, and headers that work for your car. Holley also makes a complete swap package. -Other items you will need for the swap: fuel tank/fuel lines if yours are original, drive shaft, plus any parts to complete your t56 swap. I don't know off hand of any shops that does conversions in Houston area. Maybe others can chime in. |

Any reasons why you wouldn't buy that particular LS3? Just curious. |

I've done it on mine, its not easy but its also not rocket science.
Here and nastyz28.com were my go to sites during my swap. LS1tech.com has ALOT of LS info as well... Here in the Bay Area, going rates for a basic LS swap (no tranny, or rear end work) is 9500 to 11500, includes engine in most cases. I'm at 9500 for a wrecked LS1 (GTO) parts and only partial labor, a friend helped me and i saved about 1/2 the labor....fyi |

Speed Inc does plenty of LS swaps and there just outside of Chicago
Here is my advise. Skip the LS swap and do all of you pro-touring mods Suspension Brakes Wheels & Tires Nice seats Steering Wheel Then enjoy the car for a little bit before you spend 10 grand on the swap. There is nothing wrong with the small block as is. They have worked for years leave it and enjoy it. Marty-MJ www.garagescene.net |
