EFI recommendation
I am looking for some recommendations as to which EFI people prefer. My father has a 67 Firebird with a 455 estimated at 500 hp, and wants to swap it to EFI. I am currently in Kuwait on deployment and would like to get everything ordered so when I get home I can install everything. I've been doing a little research but the internet available to us leaves a little to be desired.
Any info would be helpful. Thanks! |

First - Thank you for your service to our country! I've used all the aftermarket and OEM EFI systems through the years, and currently, the HP or Dominator Holley systems (port not throttle-body) seem to provide the best 'bang-for-the-buck' in terms of ease of calibration and results. I've had great results with many if not all the systems available (and given an unlimited budget I am partial to MoTeC) - but since you made no indication of budget or experience, I'll stick with the Holley recommendation. Good luck with your project - will be a fun one for you and your dad! Dave |
Thanks for the reply Dave! I should have specified that I will probably be going for a throttle body style, my father wants it to look carbureted, hide as much as possible

I have a friend that put the terminator holley setup on his 496" motor in a 70 SS chevelle. He's pretty happy with the results and it is at or just above the power you're looking for.

Since you have a Pontiac you have easy access to EFI ready intakes. I realize you already have an intake on it but MPI vs TBI offers better drivability and overall running quality. And sometimes for not a lot more $$$.
Thanks. |
I agree that it is a better idea to go mpi, but ultimately it's my father's car and he wants it to look like its carbureted as much as possible. I will keep trying to get him to switch but in the end it's still his car! Thanks for all the replies though, Holley has gotten good marks on multiple forums.

Check out FiTech. Simplicity at its best and easy on the wallet.

If you're going with a 4 bbl throttle body style, I'd suggest the Holley Terminator. Most 4bbl style EFI setups are "self-tuning", which sounds great in theory and sometimes works out horribly in practice. Over the last 3 years, we've swapped out at least half a dozen of these systems (usually FAST or MSD) for customers who came in with poorly running cars asking if we could "tune" their self-tuning EFI. Unfortunately, the answer is always no - except for the Holley Terminator, which is upgradeable to full computer programmability. It's great to have that option as a backup if things don't go your way. |
Thanks to everyone for the replies! Keep the opinions coming, I have some time before I need to order and I like making educated decisions.
