McLeod Racing Muscle Car 5 vs Tremec TKO600
Newbie here with my first post, currently in the middle of a complete frame off resto on my 68 Camaro, currently trying to decide on the manual tranny to put in. Will be mated to a small block 350 putting out about 450+HP...wanted to know if anyone has had any experience with the McLeod tranny vs. the Tremec TKO600 and to get some feedback (pros / cons).
Car will be used for weekend cruising and some back roads hot rodding...not a race car. Any feedback will be appreciated. Thanks, |
Personally, I would go with a T56 Magnum 6 speed.
BTW, Welcome to Lat-G. |
Thanks...was considering a 6 speed, possibly a rebuild but wasn't sure if that opened a can of expensive worms with new bellhousings, flywheels and hydraulic clutches...my head is spinning.

Id call around to like Hurst Driveline and tell them you intentions for your ride?. The T56 is the ultimate but more modifications and money. Everyone has their opinion but justbe real and research. Good luck

The T56 is obviously awesome, but the others have benefits. I can't speak for the McLeod, but the TKO is lighter and smaller than the T56, withstands similar torque outputs, and really, one overdrive (vs. two) is enough for most people. It's also cheaper . . .

Between the T56 and the TKO600, I'd go TKO600. It's smaller and more useable than the T56 IMO. I used a T56 in my '68 Nova and had to remove most if not all of the trans tunnel and some of the driveshaft tunnel. I had 28" tires and 4.33s and found 6th to totally useless. Car had a monster cam in it so it didn't like being under 1500 rpm on the freeway. The last car I did had a Richmond 5 speed in it which I found to be better than my TKO and the T56. It shifted better, zero tunnel mods in a '67 Chevelle, and was capable of plenty of power shifting abuse.
I looked closely at the McLeod at SEMA last year and really liked what they had done. It's effectively an internal rail Richmond, but with a much more updated case and design. Like the Richmond, it won't require any tunnel mods in an early car which is bitchin IMO. The only drawback is that it's only rated at 500HP and 500 torks. depending on how much animal you have up front, it might be the best choice of all. |
I wouldn't put a tko 600 in a tractor. I'm sure I just had a dud and pushed it way beyond it's limits in my car, but I hated it.
|
The TKO600 shifts like a tractor also. If I can do it I talk the customer out of them if you actually want to shift them.
We have a Mcloud trans on a current project but have not driven it yet. |
Interesting - my TKO shifted great, better than my T56.
But I also broke 3rd gear in it (albeit behind a 427TT). Haven't broken the t56 yet, but it hasn't seen the same duty cycle yet either. |
Whats better than a tko?
Anything. T56 is not great, but the best tremec offers at this point. It needs a very light clutch to shift at high rpm and require extensive tunnel surgury to fit in a musclecar. No experience with the mcLeod. |
