2nd Gen parking brake alternative

I don't like the way my parking brake runs over the exhaust on my 71 Firebird. I have Wilwood rear calipers and would like to know if someone has come up with something other than what the factory did.

Some where in the later part of the build thread on my car I touch on it. I ran Lokar cables front to rear with the Kore3 C5 brakes. I took the front cable and routed it the factory way but went further and up into the trans tunnel. From there, I split into two cable and went out to the wheels. I drilled holes and welded tubing in the rear frame rails in order to let the cables to pass through. This keeps my cables way above the exhaust and nearly hidden. So far, it's working well. My parking brakes hold on inclines now. I also modified the Kore3 kit so that both parking brakes pull towards to front. Staggered shocks makes that difficult typically. Good luck!

Parking Brakes

Neither car has a parking brake
Sometimes I wish I had one when I
am climbing out of the car after loading
it on the trailer. No issues yet for over 20
years

Anyone else with suggestions?

I have the smaller extra Wilwood parking brake caliper on mine. It works ok but not perfect.

I've also seen people plumb a clutch master into the rear brake line and attach it to a lever for a hand brake. If you could run something like that into your e-brake pedal/lever then it may work. I've never done it so I'll throw out that I have no clue of the draw backs with that setup

I run the cables between the floor and the exhaust

Your exhaust must hang very low. I'd be interested to see pictures.

I'm using a 4th-gen console, so I ran the cables down the center of the tunnel to from the handbrake and split at the rear. Used a Lokar kit, works great.

I used the Lokar cables as well. I got the idea off the DSE site. Mine are routed through the inside of the car and out the back to the brake calipers.

I'll take a look at DSE's site. I've only seen one where they were run inside the car. I didn't like how they exited the interior next to the bottom of the wheel tubs on either side. The guy just drilled about a 1/2" hole and passed them through.
