Long Time Lurker, Finally Posting Project 1969 Camaro
 

I have been lurking around Lateral G and the other forums for some time and have finally gotten around to creating a image host site and posting my project.

Background:

My dad bought the Camaro in 1970 and drove it for about 15 years in North Carolina, Colorado and Texas. It was parked due to the gasoline change to all unleaded in the mid 80s and the last registration expired August 1986. My dad started doing some "restoration" work to it here and there, but the car just sat. Unfortunately, my dad did not do anything to protect the car, so all the years of coastal and northern driving took its toll on the sheet metal. At least, when he parked it "for good," he took out the interior, carpet, etc. so not everything was destroyed.

I'll need to dig for some old photos, but here is the car the day I moved it to my grandparent's barn to get it out of the weather.

It sat in the barn for a few years while I figured out what I was going to do with it. Once I bought my house, I moved it to my garage and began tearing it down. I knew if nothing else, I would have it media blasted and put in epoxy to know better what condition the car was. As you can see in later pics, the car was pretty bad.

I got the car down to the very last pieces and sent out for media blasting. Fast forward, nearly all the usual suspect areas were bad and I needed a new floor pan, both quarters, trunk floor, roof skin, etc.

Here is the car with all the rusted metal off and the skeleton blasted and in white epoxy:

By now, I knew I would be going the Pro-Touring route and began procuring parts. First order of business is new sheet metal, so I called up MCB's and got the ball rolling on nearly the full catalog of AMD panels. Side note, call them first for anything as they have been awesome to deal with and always very competitive pricing.

I also met with Tony at The Roadster Shop when they were down for the Goodguys Lone Star Winter Nationals and ordered the Fast Track subframe.

I worked over the next year or so with a local enthusiast - also the media blaster - to slowly put the new panels back on the car. Media blasted all panels and put in white epoxy so all edges, backs, nooks, crannies, etc. are fully coated. I have thousands of photos of the rebuild, but will only showcase a few below.

I've collected many parts already, but one of the systems that really intrigued me is the InfinityBox wiring system. After much research, I decided to go this route and was able to source everything I could imagine for this project.

And began working with Jay and Dan at InfinityBox to customize the configuration. I've spent some time developing my schematic to figure everything out and map my systems. The diagram below is available to anyone who wants it. I have done it in Revit (if you know what Revit is, you know it isn't the right tool, but easy for me to work fast...but I can share in AutoCAD for anyone interested).

I'll post more detail and photos as time permits. Work is crazy and life with a 4 year old doesn't give me much time, but things are really starting to take off.

I hope to be done and driving within two years.

The "builder" that helped me out wanted a build table to work on his projects so we developed this.

He built it and the Camaro was the guinea pig project for the table. It worked pretty good and we made some modifications to it. It is very heavy though as it needed to be "portable" since his shop space is limited.

ps I just looked at the wiring diagram on my computer vs my phone and what is that you do for a living because that is pretty cool. I actually would love to see a pdf or a full size so I can see all of the details as when I blow it up the image is not that good.

Thanks all! Like I said, long time lurker so I've already learned so much but haven't given credit where credit is due. I stumbled onto this and the other forums years ago and have frequented virtually daily ever since.

Marty, I'm actually an Architect, but an OCD (technically CDO) freak that plans my plan. I suffer greatly from paralysis by analysis, and take forever to make a decision. I tried to upload a larger image, but was restricted by size. Fair warning, the configuration table is not accurate yet as I am working out the mapping with Jay and crew and haven't wrapped everything up yet.

I cannot figure out how to upload or link directly to a PDF as my image host doesn't seem to like PDFs. Any feedback on how to post PDF or email address to send, and it'll be on the way. I also have it in AutoCAD for anyone who wants the editable source files.

LOL, I suffer from pretty much the same sets of disorders. So I feel your pain.

I am also married to an Architect who is no the CMO of a large construction company. So not sure what is worse being OCD or being married to an Architect that does everything 3 or 4 times before the project starts.
