What's required for non competition racing?

Hi guys. So I'm still a ways out from driving my vette but the goal is to be able to do some of those cone race courses (not sure the name of this challenge) and also take my vette to local tracks like Buttonwillow. What's required for safety with our old cars? Roll cage? 5 point seat harness? Ect. I want to go out when they have open track day . That sort of thing. Thanks

Josh

It's difficult to be prescriptive with this. How far you go with safety is up-to you and your personal comfort levels.

There are MANY trade-offs to be made with using a street car on the track.

I'd recommend reading through this thread:

Jeds makes a good point and the thread he linked to is good reading.

cone race courses: Do you mean autocross, also known as "solo" by the SCCA? If so, for autocross the main requirements are no missing lug nuts, battery secured, good throttle return springs.

Open track days. These events are targeted towards street cars. So for non convertible cars you just need OEM 3 point belts and safety inspection.

Where are you located? You mention Buttonwillow as local so I'm assuming you live north of the grapevine?

EDIT: just saw your location. There are a number of autocross events at the Marina Airport which is a little over 100 miles from you. You can probably find stuff closer too.

Autocross and track days typically require factory safety equipment. But as you and the car get faster the safety requirements become more important. Here is another great source of info.

Thanks guys for the responses. I skimmed through the link Jed posted which I will really read in the next few days. Ron is a smart man so I enjoy reading what he writes. Thanks for the link.

Yes autocross is what I meant by cone races. Okay so it looks like that won't be a problem to enter. I will contact some of the local race tracks and see what they require also. I have a convertible so I will have to ask if there are any special requirements. Thanks
