Advice on Undercoating
 

Can anyone offer suggestions on a good undercoating for a car that will see lots of time on the road? I would like something that will stop the progression of any existing rust, and is very durable. I would also like something that requires as little prep as possible :) I realize that last part might be asking a bit much, but I figure ask for everything I want and then see where I land.

I've considered POR-15 because I remember the stuff being rock hard, but there doesn't appear to be much rust for it to bond to. I've also considered bed liner as it seems like it would be about as durable as it comes. I'm just not sure what sort of prep would be required or whether it will stop/prevent rust.

I used 3-M Body Schutz.

I've read lots of threads on this. I've noticed a lot of highend shops use Raptor shot out of a schutz gun. so I tried it. it's awesome. covers very nice. it's not a smooth texture but not as bumpy as herculiner. which I've shot out of a schutz gun before too. not a fan of that. way too bumpy for me.

So a neutralizer first and then a rubberized coating for protection?

Will the coating adhere to the neutralizer?

you need to remember that your prep work is your foundation. If you do not clean/degrease/sand/prep the surface then whatever you put on top of it will probably not last long and and you will waste your money on whatever you decide to purchase.

Well, this was a timely post. I was coming here to search for undercoating and rust converters for my new to me Tahoe. Thanks for posting, Doc!

as far as POR-15 i would not use it. i would degrease/clean/sand/prep substrate and apply couple coats of epoxy primer then after that has cured apply your undercoating. I have used Lizard Skin sound deadening and heat control on the inside of the floor. Dyno mat in my opinion is messy and if you ever have to remove it to do upgrades (mini-tub/weld-in sub-frame connectors) it is a nightmare to remove. I have used raptor for undercoating and it works very well and looks uniform. You could use the Lizard Skin as undercoating as well to serve dual purposes as it dries rock hard.
