T56 Magnum sequential shifter, pros/cons.
I have been running the stock Tremec T56 Magnum shifter for a few years now and have found it to be just marginally acceptable on the street and nearly useless at track speeds. I know I could replace it with any number of aftermarket H pattern shifters all of which are undoubtedly better than what I have. But I have seen youtube videos of sequential shifted T56s and I really like the idea of a sequential shifter. I have found two companies that currently sell a sequential shifter that will bolt on a stock T56 Magnum, S1 and Bremer. Both companies happen to be based in Australia and both shifters sell for about the same money with all the options at about $2400US. I'm looking for feedback from anyone who may have installed a sequential shifter and your experience with them. Might be helpful to discuss the pros and cons of a sequential shifted T56 maybe something I might not have considered.

$2400 for a shifter :headspin: You are crazy to pay that. Sell your Magnum and go buy a G-Force GSR or GF5R dogbox if you want a bad ass affordable transmission.
There is no data for how much this "sequential" shifter actually wears the synchros. Have you tried any of the other shifters available for the T56 Magnum? |
Will let you know in a couple months. I have a customer that has one on order and I am ordering the Magnum this week. He didn't want a standard H pattern shifter period.

We would never spend crazy money on something just because we want it... pro touring is nothing if not practical....

It looks like the S1 has dropped in price recently. I like the appearance and simplicity of the Bremer design for potential shift boot fitment.
I like the idea of a sequential for the track. I guess I would worry about the tires breaking loose at speed. For example if your car has a tendency to break loose in upper gears (1-2 2-3 shift) at full throttle, and the sequential gearshift change is the hard/fast abrupt change, I am wondering if that would have the tendency to put the car over the edge traction-wise. As opposed to the H pattern shifter, where you could potentially back-off slightly in the danger area then feather it up to full pedal again. Any thoughts or experience on this? |
Based on the videos I have seen, you can shift as fast or slow as you choose. I really can't see that one of these shifters would wear synchronizers or shock tires any faster than a standard H pattern would. It appears to me that banging gears with either shifter would induce the same amount of wear and drive line shock.
Curious if Mike's customer ever got his shifter in yet. |
I really wanted to get a PPG sequential T56 setup, but was quoted 16k for the setup. It's cool but not worth the cash to me. Maybe down the road.

$2400 is peanuts compared to what I have spent on other items in this build. Before this project I would never have considered spending over $1300 per wheel but I did. I have become somewhat numb to parts prices. I like my T56 and don't want a 4 or 5 speed dog box so shifter it will be. |
Did anyone ever pull the trigger on one of these? looks like bremer's website is down now.

Opinion
I talked to Tremec about these bolt on sequential shifters for the T56 Magnum and he said that to make the transmission truly sequential, about $4k worth of work needed to be done inside the transmission in addition to the shifter.
