black out trim process
 

I've seen some car's on here with the trim blacked out. I'd like to do that as well. Mine has a mix of stainless, aluminum, and pot metal and I'm not sure how to go about it.

Thoughts?

I've already removed the side trim and it's not going back on.

My car was painted prior to my purchase in 1989 and I do not know who painted it. Best I can figure is they used a slightly texture rocker paint. Not sure on how they prepped the trim either, guessing scotchbrite scuff. It has held up pretty well.

When I had my wheel centers painted, I think we ended up using a VW rocker paint that matched texture and satin sheen quite well.

I need to replace the worn out drivers side mirror, my plan is to scotchbrite it and hopefully use the POR 15 Top Coat aerosol I have left over from painting my control arms.

I was very pleased with how the POR 15 sprayed out.

I know Mark used Cerakote on Hellfire's trim, he mentioned it chipped easily which surprised me as it appears to perform very well on firearms. Possibly the base metal deflects beyond the elasticity limits of the Cerakote. Charley may be able to provide more info.

It's just a Poor Tinkering car with 29 year old paint. :D

With modern cars, they just wrap the trim. No different than wrapping the paint. Holds up very well and has a uniform color all over. You could do gloss or matte or even metallic.... I've also done trim in plasti-dip. Not quite as durable and does have a texture but easily repaired or taken off all together.

When I did my bird the first time I sanded the windshield and back light aluminum trim with 500 grit and shot them with SEM trim Black. Came out well and lasted 20 years till I took the car apart again. Chromed pot metal door handles, headlight buckets, parking light bezels I sandblasted then filled pits, primed & painted body color. I left the chrome pot metal trim around the grills and painted the grills silver with black grates (using the SEM trim Black). Roll cage and grills are the same Lotus silver to tie the interior & exterior.

IMO you have to be very careful when changing the car from stock brightwork to blacked, body colored or eliminated or else the car can end up looking kinda "funny" in a bad way. Sometimes color has an impact on that as well. As an example I'll use my 81 Malibu. I'm colorblind so I'm limited on what colors I'm willing to paint my cars. I've had mostly red cars all my life but can see yellow so I did the Malibu in Audi Imola Yellow. Small yellow cars look ok but as the cars get bigger the vast expanses of yellow needs to be broken up by trim, vinyl tops, convertibles, etc. or it's just too much yellow. On my Malibu I've kept a Landau top to reduce the sq ft of yellow.

I mention the color because your car's pretty big so removing the side trim is going to have a big visual difference on a slab sided car like that.

You can see in pic below without black Landau top how a slab sided all yellow car is too much yellow. Besides the roof I'll use a pinstripe and some emblems to break up the yellow.

Here is something I found on google that represents what I am thinking about for stance and color. I do want to put the vinyl top back on, and I have the trim.

I took the side trim off because I wanted to de-chrome the car, and somewhat make it unique to the Torino world. Too many GT's this year look the same. I have a 68 and I have been converting it to 9 tail lights because they have a slight slope to them and no side markers.

Sand it and spray with SEM trim black. Easy to touch up if need be

Great idea switching to the 69 qtr extensions to eliminate the side markers! I had to go look at pics of Fairlanes and Torinos I worked on to figure out what you were talking about.
