Offsetting motor to pasenger side?

I am putting together a road race car and am having a heck of a time with steering shaft clearance on the drivers side and don't have a lot of time to get the car done until the race.

I was wondering if it is possible to mount the engine/trans maybe .5 to 1" towards the passenger side, somebody was telling me this is a good thing to do because it will help offset the weight of the driver, but I've never heard of that. It would definitely make my life easier with exhaust clearance on the left side of the motor!

Lots have done it. Some Mopars come that way from the factory.

In first gen f bodies, big block and Pontiac engines are offset from the factory for steering clearance.

First gen camaro is 1/2" offset. Many Mopars are 1" offset
