Bi-focal safety glasses
 

For those that might be interested, while out at a fastener supplier picking some speciality bolts yesterday I asked the saleman who was helping me about his glasses.......bi-focal safety ones. Us older guys sometimes need a little help up close with the protection of s#*t not falling into your face.

I tried a brand called Body Guard available at Fastenal and didn't like them. I found it uncomfortable to try and look down far enough to use the magnifier. So I went back to using reading glasses and full face shields.

#1 --- most glasses these days are plastic -- so are already a type of safety glass??

#2 -- Bifocals don't help you when your head can't quite get the angle needed (think up under a dash)

#3 -- Sometimes I take my bifocals off and flip them upside down so when I need to see with a head position that's "looking up" -- I can look thru magnifier that is now "on top" instead of at the bottom

Safety glasses have a wider section where the lens sits in the frame that holds the lens in the frame during impact. Also the lens is made of polycarbonate or trivex which is impact resistant. Z87.1 will be on the frame somewhere.
They also make an safety occupational lens with the bifocal segment on bottom and top for under dash or cabinets etc.

I use a prescription pair of "dual seg" safety glasses that utilizes bifocal lenses on both top and bottom.
Any eye doctor can order them.
It took me a while to get comfortable using them, but it beats working under my dash half blind!

Also, if you are over 40 and wear bifocals or contacts and want to see under the dash then put a pair of cheaters on over your glasses and look thru your distance portion of the glasses and that will give you the near vision you need without looking thru the bifocal. The power of the cheater is determined by the focal length you need to see. I.E. Arms length is approx. a 1.00 power and 2.00 is approx. normal reading distance away from the eye.

I know this is an old thread, but here is a site with a nice selection of bifocal safety glasses that I have purchased from for years. They even have a pair for upside down or overhead work. Their prices are very reasonable too.
