1st gen door latch assembly issues

I installed new door latch assemblies in my 68 1st gen. They opened the door perfectly till I installed door handles, not it seems the door handle pins do not push the latch far enough in to release the latch. My thought is to JB Weld a piece of metal to the pad on the door latch so the pin can push the latch in further. Anyone have any better ideas? Thanks in advance!

Are the door handles new repros?

No, I believe they are repops that were on the car when I bought it.The door latch assemblies I installed are new. I am starting to put the car back together and these door handles worked with the old latches before I took the car apart.

Those pins were likely trimmed. I would get some new handles or try to bend the tabs on the latches.

This problem is interesting..,

Thoughts:
1. If you have aftermarket latches, can you simply bend the tab that the door handle “stabs”. Use a vise or whatever you have, to “yield” the tab.

2. Could you tig weld a spacer out of stainless on the latch tab.., instead of JB weld?

I had the door handles powdercoated so I hate to spend more money on door handles, going to remove latches and try to bend the latch pads. Thanks Don

Thanks, I think I am going to try and bend the tab. 1 step forward 2 steps back.:hairpullout:

Are the pads on the latch assembly “springing” back properly? Might be worth looking at briefly. Maybe the return spring on the latch isn’t there.

Thanks, I will check it out.

I have the exact same issue with new latches and my ring brother door handles. I was gonna add a spacer to the latch pad to try to help.
