Set 20 bearing Ford 9"

I am reading on the internet that a Set 20 tapered bearing is a direct replacement for a 9" with the 3.150 O.D. roller bearing, is that correct?

My 9" housing has never been used so I assume I would need to press an inner bearing race into the housing to allow for the tapered bearing?

Since I would want to take the axles in and out a few times can I leave the outer seal off until I am ready to fill the housing with lubricant?

Thanks guy's, I always appreciate the advice :newbie:

In order.

Mostly true, it depends on your axles. The tapered bearings have a 1.562 bore.

The bearing race is slip fit so it will go in and out pretty easily. When removing the axles it is common for the race to stay in the housing.

You can't leave the outer seal off. Those bearings press on and off easily enough but the wedding bands are twice as thick as the ones that come with ball bearings......they are a bear to get off.

The Big Ford (tapered-SET20) and Torino (roller-non lubricated) can both be used in the same housing. Both bearings have the same outer diameter. Like Donny said, the two are only compatible with their respective axles. They both have different diameter inner measurements. Which housing are you using?

Thanks guys , I appreciate the feedback.

I have not ordered axles yet, and I will need to double check the housing I.D.
