How long will paint/clear last on the shelf?
I have $750 worth of PPG paint and clear that was to be used on my Cobra replica but I sold that car before I painted it. I got all top of the line stuff from PPG back in 2000 and was never even opened. Any of you guys know if this stuff would still be good? Im thinking of stripping and painting one of my 66 novas and it sure would be nice if I could use this paint. On another note. Will a gallon of base and clear do a nova? The color is viper red so im unsure how much would be needed to cover well.

Shake it! as long is the pigments in the base still mix it should be good, Tint your seal coat red youll have enuf if not you will need more base, If you buy more base mix them all so there is no color diff.

viper red is super high solids pigment, meaning it covers great. personally i would put it over white sealer. a gallon of base, i assume not reduced, will be plenty, but you can always get more just in case.
i like lots of clear, cuz i REALLY love colorsanding and polishing  a gallon will go about 3 good coats on everything, i guess if you need "more" is up to you. |
I have a gallon of base not reduced and a gallon of clear. It seems like I remember planning on 4 coats of clear and color sanding it back down to like 3 coats. I also have a quart of a super bright white that was going to be for the stripes. I have not seen a nova with stripes but maybe i should put some on it anyhow. LOL

Do not put the red over a white sealer or base unless you want pink for a color. And i dont care how good the pigments are reds are the worst covering color! Self life will allso depend on temp.

A gallon of base? That is more than enough. I would probably toss the clear but that is your call. Whatever you do throw out any hardeners reactive reducers as they do have a shelf life. They are also photchemically reactive so if they have been opened they are junk.
Spray a panel and check it out?? |
The clear is what cost so much. LOL I guess I may spray something and see how it does. Im not looking for a show car finish but I dont want the pain coming off in a month. The main thing I would worry about is the paint curing. Would it not suck to paint a car and the paint not cure. LOL
