DMV Special Construction Title??
 

Here is the question..

I'm looking at a 67 Camaro Convert I'm thinking about buying. Overall a pretty nice car..For what I think is a fair price. Problem is it has a "2000 Special Construction" title. What would the reason be for that? And what are the smog laws on it? The owner said it fell out of the system for not being registered for 7 years?? Not sure what the truth is? Anyways not sure what the deal is and how I would go about smog etc. I'm in California by the way.

Anybody know anything about "Special Construction Title"?

I think that's BS Brent. I've had cars that had not been registered longer than that, and although a pain in the rear and fees were involved they still ended up with a normal title. That will affect the value, plus if it's the same special constructed title I had on my Cobras it invites smog issues. I think it will be thrown into the every two year deal as it'll be registered as a 2000 model, and the engine will need to conform to that or at least all the smog equipment it originally had. So you use a 72 454 you'll need all smog equipment, air cleaner, EGR, etc. that it came with. Do an LSX and look out!

Do some research to be sure, but that's something I'd avoid.

Thanks for info Jody. This guy has only had it for a year, so maybe he is running into issues. Maybe that's why he is selling it. Funny you mention an LSX. That's exactly what I plan on doing. A LS2 w/ a 6 speed. I think I'm going to aviod it and continue looking. Not that I'm in a hurry or anything. It's to bad. Pretty nice car. It's a clone SS/RS Big Block, 12 bolt posi, etc for 16K. Still needs work but overall a fairly nice car.

You can check with DMV first, don't want you to miss a good deal. But I think that's exactly why he's selling it.

Does it have a state issue vin or the original? if so has the original been removed?

It has a state issued VIN and yes the orig has been removed.

The car probably will just have to comply with local state laws but if it has current registration and im I would not be worried but as Jody stated i would make a few calls before I jump in, Good Luck

Did you ever think about selling it to someone out of state, that can buy a 74 and older car on just a bill of sale, like Georgia or Alabama, have a new title issued from that state, then sell it back to you without all the title issues that seem to be attached to the car?

Just a thought.

My sister has a chevy truck that got stolen, it was found a year later and she went to the police auction to buy it back, it had the original vin removed and changed with a bogus one, CHP had to put a new vin on the body but its not considered a 2004. would this be the same kind of issue, I wouls contact the CHP or DMV and ask.

I just registered a 55 chevy gasser race car that ahd been out of the system for 25 plus years. All you had to do was have the vin verified by a police officer. There was no special construction. I would be sketchy of a special constuction title. It might be a vinless car that somebody registered.

But on the other side of the coin he has to take care of emission unless you guys make a deal other wise. Does he want to sell the car and have you take care of smog. If so be scared. If it does not have to be smogged for some reason I don't think the title would affect it. i would have tought it would have to modern safety standards 5mph bumpers and airbags or some crap to be registered as a 2000 or whatever.
