New Guy / Project: Philo / 64 Rambler

Hey everyone. My name is philo and I've got a 64 Rambler Classic 550 2 Door Post. It still has the 196 six/BW slush o matic but that will come out as soon as I build new rear suspention. Plans are:

302 Ford / T5 (carbed now but FI after it runs and drives)
9" rear with a torque link
shaved door handles
17 inch wheels (as wide as I can get away with)
11" or bigger disk brakes (MII with 11" rotors most likely)
Fuel cell
HID lights
Maybe more

Here are some pics of the stock crap...

Got a rear!

I got a 9" truck rear end to cut down! Going to get a set of 31 spline moser axles and FRPP 11" disk kit. Gotta find some 98+ Crown Vic spindles for the front. 12.4" front and 11" rear disks should stop a ~2700 pound car reasonably well.

idea

 philofab

i have a great idea for you..since you already have the panhard//spring setup go back with that on the 9 inch. juts get 4 bushed ends and some control arm tubes like mine and put a bracket setup on the frame forward of the rear end mounted to the inside of the rail to attach the control arm..looks like a straight shot forward...you have a nice pic of the same spot i used(right before the motor shots) on the otherside of the lift boxes...good strong. place it works.
you have less work to do your rear end setup than mine was...
nice clean rust free under body....
have anymore ramblers laying around like that?

Cool?

That will be a cool car!

Just for my learning! What front suspension are you using? I saw you mention Crown Vic spindles, you going to run Crown Vic front suspension? Just seems to me to be really wide.

Also, that is an interesting looking stock rear suspension setup. It almost resembles a center-drive truckarm setup if I'm looking at the pics correctly.

I love seeing the less popular cars get some attention - Keep us updated!

Suspention info

Most of the suspention will be fabricated. I want to use crown vic spindles + brakes but I will build the upper and lower control arms. I have a jig for building a-arms (I normally use it for M2 stuff), my uppers will attach the stock location and the lowers will be attached to my own tubular x-member. I plan on using a coilover shock on the front.

The rear is very much like a center drive truck arm setup except the enclosed driveline. This is the reason I have not pulled the stock engine/trans out yet... no way to keep it a roller because the trans locates the rear end. I have been told the V8 ramblers of my year had leaf springs, never seen one though. The car actually runs good but I hated driving it because the suspention is so spacey. The little six has had the car up to about 110 mph but it felt as if I was driving a hovercraft.

The rear will be a torque arm setup like radramblers & third gen camaros. I will use a panhard bar in the rear and possibly upgrade it later to a watts link if I can get the roll center low enough. I will use a seperate shock / coil setup in the rear like the factory did.

I'll post an update tonight or in the morning showing status on my rearend narrowing.
