I don't know about soda on steel, but not good on aluminum. The soda residue if not thoroughly removed set up corrosion in many military aircraft several years back and they quit using it.

I have heard not so good things about dipping. Same as above, if not completely neutralized it has come back and haunted people. There is a company in Arlington, TX though that is dipping with biodegradable (sp?)products and after 15 years have had zero problems. I called on pricing and for my 69 Blazer and was $1300 for the shell, $135 for each major body panel, and you could bring all the small items and they would throw that stuff in. Process takes 2 weeks.
