BMW make a diesel 3-series sedan that will keep pace with the gas version without drama. Diesel tech is going places, and it's definitely getting a lot more R&D than the vast majority of contemporary gasoline engines.

Besides all of that; horsepower is a product of torque... Simple mathematics. The only thing that has really been holding diesels up is this stoic mindset that they're truck/tractor motors only, and moreover, once you start applying modern cylinder head, injector, and rotating assembly (lightweight) designs to the diesel mills, they can really haul ass.
