The Mules rear end is 56.187". That is with rear discs (app. .300" thickness each) and 6.375" b.s. on 18 X 12.5" wide wheels. To run a 6" b.s. you'd need to subtract .375" from each side for a total of .750" from his measurement. 56.187 - .750 = 55.437" total width.
I do not know the internal specs of the Mules rear end. Mine is the same Currie with aluminum center, nodular iron 9+ third member, tru-trac, 3.50 gears, and Currie 31 spline axles.
Finally, you still need to do your own measuring. These cars are not all identical, especially if they've been hit and repaired in the past. Mine had a 1" difference in wheelwell width side to side when I bought it.
