It sounds like the wrong offset/backspacing. We have a '67 and '69 Camaro with 10" wide wheels with 285mm tires in the rear and they don't stick out. We have done dozens of these fitments with no issues. A 275 is the perfect no issue size for stock cars with the correct offset/backspaced rear wheels. The fitment should be the same for a Firebird, since they are literally the same car.
