Your best bet is to find a car that is going to be complete or nearly complete. In the long run you will spend less with a nicer car in the beginning. Make a list of parts you are wanting on this car such as aftermarket parts, If you are building a G-machine? You can easily spend
5-10K more even on a w/ aftermarket.

Its hard to tell exactly what you have in mind? With a little time spent here you will get some good ideas and maybe a good tip on some cars.

Like Jody said doing the work yourself you will still spend 20K or more w/ a rough car.
