You could sneeze on an LS3 or LS2 and make over 500hp.

I still think the best "bang for the buck" in new crate engines would be an LS2 with a cam.

I made well over 500 (560hp) with an LS2, AFR heads, COMP cam (232/234 112) and FAST intake.

I haven't messed with an LS3 yet but the intake and heads (GM) are great and you could easily up the cam and make over 500. Just do some research since camshaft selection is more critical due to the huge intake valves in the heads.
