There are kits available that mount the switch itself in the truck. They have an attachment rod that can then go out to the outside so it is legal. Instead of the switch being "turned" off, it becomes a push/pull type setup.
I was planning on drilling a hole in the taillight housing and lens the size of the rod(3/8" I think) and using one of those extensions. Since this is just the rod going through the housing it might be possible to keep the lights functioning. This setup is fairly common.
