Yeah --- sounds like heat soak to me too...

A mini starter will give you some more clearance - just don't buy the cheap chinese versions... and some of these allow you to index the solenoid (or clock it as some call it) == and I've seen guys clock this down to the bottom away from the heat/headers.

I was having this issue on my lamely built 37 ford with a super mild 350 SBC -- pulled the starter only to find the studs in the back of the starter AND the solenoid were both loose... put them back in properly (I didn't install or build the car) and everything cranks up just the way it should now.
