But you have a reason why you want to delete thread when you ask to moderator. But in some site provide edit or delete command button top of the thread you post.
the edit/delete function is available to all members on their own posts, but I think there's a time limit on some sites for how long you have access to it. After that time you'll need a mod or admin to do it for you.

It appears on this site that the original poster can edit his own posts indefinitely. You go into edit for the delete option.
