I use .040 aluminum,Have for years.You can shape it,bend it,And it will keep it's shape.Wood for those type of panels wont last.I make small "L" brackets and fuse them under the trunk edges in several places(no damage done to car)Then we use a spring clip to hold the panel to the bracket.This way you can take the panels in and out and don't have to worry about the panels falling out,rattling,breaking.I also make are interior panels out of the same aluminum.......I know,I know this post needs pics.I will see what I can do for you.
