I used seam sealer and just applied an excess amount,let it harden up for a week and then trimmed it flat with a razor knife blade , then prime paint and not worry. It looks flat and smooth most all of the time in most all light and somethimes it just barely shows the seam. No cracks or dips.

Welding is not recommended but if you choose to you can.There is a lot of stress on a stock rear panel in hard cornering. If you go from leaf springs to a different rear it does change this problem.
